 Statement.

What I would like to transfer in my work as an artist is "Love of life". The pleasure I have in observing and translating the beauty of nature is my ultimate motivation. It is such as an ongoing conversation with my Creator. I would like to depict the harmony between the natural and the man-made, using simple lines and colour as my favourite tools to balance my compositions. Recently I moved from painting with paint to painting with wool. Not that I want to abandon other mediums, pastel is still the closest we can get with pure colour I suppose, but it is rewarding to experience how wool can open up artistic ways in order to transfer my ideas.  

My wall hangings are in the first place an interpretation of the overwelming beauty of colours which I spot in nature. No photographic view but an artistic impression with my own aesthetic values as starting point. Sometimes I work with pure, by nature itself coloured animal fleeces resulting in an abstract in subdued earth tones. In turn, a sunset will be translated abundantly in energetic reds. Some of my work is monochromatic since I find that concentrating on one colour increases the psychological and symbolic associations the viewer has with colour. However I am equally fond of using the full spectrum of saturated colours as this can create a sense of sheer exuberance and joy. The intensity of the colours in which felting wool is currently available gives me many opportunities to experiment with.

The tactile and absorbent properties of wool are perfect for decorative purposes, however, for me is this not a point of departure.

Rather is it a challenge to explore and combine the centuries-old felt technique with modern materials and current artistic knowledge.

The idea to translate my pastels into woollen wall hangings has gradually been developed and proved to be a source of undreamt prospects.

Not only examining the work of previous artists provided me with a wealth of knowledge but joining hands with local artists as well as frequently visiting museums and art galleries will always be a welcome source of information.

In creating these wall coverings, my intention is to visually uplift and energize both the viewer and the space.

 Wat ik wil overbrengen in mijn werk als kunstenaar is in vier woorden te vatten: 'Liefde voor het leven". Het plezier in het observeren en overbrengen van de schoonheid van de Schepping is mijn ultieme motivatie. Met kleur en lijnenspel probeer ik zowel de gewenste sfeer op te roepen alsook de juiste balans in de compositie te vinden.

Mijn vilten wandkleden en schilderijen zijn in de eerste plaats bedoeld als een vertolking van de overweldigende kleurenpracht die mij treft in de natuur. Geen fotografische weergave maar een artistieke impressie waarbij mijn eigen esthetische waarden van doorslaggevende betekenis zijn.

De tactile en geluiddempende eigenschappen van wol lenen zich bij uitstek voor decoratieve doeleinden maar dit is voor mij nooit een uitgangspunt. Veeleer is het een uitdaging om de eeuwen oude vilt technieken uit te breiden en te combineren met hedendaagse materialen en nu geldende artistieke inzichten. Het vilt proces is een bewerkelijke bezigheid die na een consequente en volhardende leer periode mooie resultaten kan opleveren. Mijn ambitie is het om door de combinatie met andere materialen steeds boeiender resultaten te verkrijgen. Het idee om mijn pastel tekeningen te vertalen in wollen wandkleden is gaandeweg ontstaan en levert veel onvermoede informatie op. De intensiteit van de kleuren waarin viltwol op dit moment verkrijgbaar is werkt aanstekelijk en geeft mij oneindig veel plezier. Vooral het zelf eerst verven van naaldvilt, zijde en fluweel dat daarna wordt verwerkt bevindt zich nog in de kinderschoenen maar is zeer de moeite waard om te onderzoeken.

Door het bestuderen van het werk van andere kunstenaars waarvan Georgia O 'Keeffe en de fotograaf Karl Blossfeldt mijn grote voorbeelden zijn, heb ik veel kennis op gedaan over compositie en balans. Ook zal behalve het samenwerken met andere kunstenaars het bezoeken van musea en kunstgalerien altijd een welkome bron van informatie blijven.
